THE ZIG-ZAG ROAD.

IMPROVEMENTS IN PROGRESS. The improvement of tho Zig-zag, tho somewhat tortuous road between Lyttelton and Sumner, is being actively sought by the Lyttelton Borough Council, and yesterday Mr J. R. Webb, Mayor of tho borough, called on the Mayor of Christchurch to discuss the question of improved road facilities between port and plains. It was agreed to call a conference of local bodies for an early date, to meet at the City Council Chamber, to appoint a deputation to the Government on the matter. It is hoped either that the Government will undertake the improvement of the road or will give a substantial subsidy towards the work. The Automobile Association, among other bodies, has taken the matter up, and it is expected that the project will be carried through. An alternative suggestion has been made that a splendidly-graded route for an entirely new road to Lyttelton is ‘ available up MurrayAynsley’s Hill and down to the left of Rapaki, finishing near the Lyttelton abattoir. This, it is pointed out, would bring Lyttelton traffic right into Greater Christchurch on the one road, instead of bringing it to Sumner, eight miles distant. One fact that is being strongly urged in connection with the formation of a good road from Lyttelton is the possible interference with tho tunnel by accident.
