" Times."—Sydney •' Sun " Special Cables, (Received August 21, 6.55 p.m.) A CONVICT'S MONEY. LONDON, August 21. A convict undergoing four years' penal servitude for defrauding farmers applied at the Guildhall that £99 which ho possessed when arrested should be given to a woman who was convicted but bound over at the same time. The Alderman said he was morally certain that tho money was the proceeds of frauds. Numerous claims had been made, and a decision was difficult. He refused tho application, suggesting that the convict should be adjudged bankrupt, upon which the money could be properly divided. The case was adjourned for six months.
A REPORTED ALLIANCE. LONDON, August 20. The report of a British-French-Span-ish Alliance is obtaining additional credence since King Alfonso's visit. AMERICAN WHEAT CROP. NEW YORK, August 20. Tho heat wave has seriously damaged tho crops. The August bulletin ■ indicates that the yield will bo four hundred and fifty million bushels below that of last year. CATHOLIC CONGRESS. BERLIN, August 20. Tho Roman Catholic Congress urged Catholics to give preference to purely Catholic Unions, instead of co-operating with non-Catholics. If tho suggestion should be accepted, the Socialists will have in tho Catholics a dangerous rival bidding for tho votes of the workers'.
