ANGLICAN SYNOD.

FOURTH DAY. The Christchurch Diocesan Synod continued its session at 4 p.m. yesterday, tho president (Bishop Julius) occupying the chair. STANDING COMMITTEE. The election of clerical members of the Standing Committee resulted as folio vV3 :—Dean . Harper, Archdeacon Gosset, Archdeacon Ensor, Rev F. P. Fendall, Rev H. E. Purchas, Rev J. do 13. Galway, Rev T. A. Hamilton and Rev Mackenzie Gibson. HARVEST INTERCESSION. Tho Rev J. H. Rogers moved: “ That in view of tho fact that considerable depression exists in some of the' country districts, and 'that no provision is made in Now Zealand for special intercession for a blessing on the fruits of the earth, this Synod respectfully requests tho Bishop to appoint a Sunday on which intercession shall be offered for a blessing on the fruits of the earth and for a fruitful harvest.” In the course of a short discussion the opinion was expressed by speakers that the Church had already set aside the Rogation Days for this purpose. An amendment that the clergy should be urged to more strictly observe the Rogation Days as times of intercession for blessing on the fruits of -the earth was moved by the Rev H. D. Burton. The amendment was lost and the motion was carried. THE “CHURCH NEWS.” Mr. W. Guise Brittan moved: “That this Synod recommends the Diocesan ‘ Church News ’ to vicars, church officors, and church-people fenorally, and urges that efforts should e made to increase tho circulation of the paper.” In urging the claims of the “ Church News” the movor mentioned that the publication had now nearly attained its jubilee, having been published first

On resuming, the Bills to amend “The Nominators' Statute, 1891,” awi “ The Diocesan Synod Election Statute, 1891,” • were read a third time and passed. . - -r-'. THE CLERGY TRUST FUND. The debate'"Upon the’ l second reading of the Bill to - amend “.The Regulations for the Jtsmgemaat of tlio Clergy. /Widows and Orphans Trust Fund/ was continued. The proposal contained in the Bil) wan that Section 10 (a), which reads: “A subscriber shall have a claim as ail annuitant after tho ■ attainment of sixty-five years of age; in "every case ij shall be necessary that he cease to holq any cure or diocesan office in this dioi cese or elsewhere, except .the office oi assistant curate or that of diocesan officer appointed by tho Bishop to take temporarily the duties of absent or invalided clergy,” should be amended striking out the words “ or elsewhere.” Tho president said that the time was not vet ripe for tho proposal, and suggested the withdrawal of tho Bill. He promised that the Bill would be brought in next rear as a “ Government measure ” if it was deemed expedient by the Standing Committee,, after investigation, to proceed with the matter. After a little further discussion, the Rev S. Hinson begged leave to withdraw the Bill, and permission was given. APPOINTMENT OF TRUSTEE. 'On the motion of Canon Knowles, the Synod confirmed the appointment by tho Standing Committee of Mi- Thomas Deßenzy Harman as a Church Property Trustee. : DIOCESAN NOMINATORS. The election of four diocesan nominators resulted as follows:—On the first ballot—Dean plaiper and Archdeacon 1 Gosset; on the second ballot—Messrs H. W. Bishop and W. O. Bean. CLERGY PENSION TRUST BOARD. Messrs T. D. Harman, G. M'lntyre and E. G. Hogg were elected member# of the Clergy Pension Trust Board. SALE OF PROPERTY. The Rev E. Whitehouse moved—* “ That this Synod authorises . the Church Property Trustees to sell ! the Ashburton vicarage and glebe and to apply the proceeds of such sale in the manner following:—-To pay the cost of building a new vicarage on the site of the present schoolroom; to pay the cost of a site for a new schoolroom; to pay the cost of> tho erection thereon of a new school building, or. as an alternative, the removal and enlargement -of the present school buildings; to invest any balance and to pay the annual in* come therefrom to the Ashburton, vestry, pending a further direction of, thfl Synod.” Mr F. Ferriman moved to amend: the latter part of the motion in the direction of making the income from invest- •, ment payable to the vicar, and.not to the vestry. A further amendment was -moved, that the new vicarage should be ‘built in brick. fTlie Synod adjourned at 10 p.m. till 4 p.m. oil Monday.
