ACCLIMATISATION CONFERENCE.

WELLINGTON, August 23

At the Acclimatisation Society’s Conference to-day, the following resolutions were unanimously carried:— “ That the Government be requested to acquire from the Natives any land forming part of the island of Kapiti at present belonging to such Natives, and that the whole island be kept as a saiictuary for birds.’’ il ’lbat the Zealand Government be congratulated on making efforts to acclimatise Atlantic salmon in New Zealand waters, and that it is hoped tho work will still be continued.” “That the Minister of Internal Affairs be recommended to consent to an open season next year for opossums, subject to regulations to bo submitted by the respective Societies interested.” et That tlie Animals Protection Acts be so amended as to give the Governor-in-Oouncil power to issue regulations whereby the fee for taking hares may be fixed to suit the various acclimatisation districts.” “ That the Government be asked to continue its efforts to establish Atlantic salmon in the Waiau river.” “ That a differential license fee for shooting and fishing be instituted, and oversea • bo charged at a higher rate than residents of the dominion.” “ That tho Stamp Act and Death Duties Act be amended to exempt from the payment of duty any transfer, conveyance, gift, devise or He quest to any Acclimatisation Society, or to any person or persons in trust for any Acclimatisation Society.” “ That the Government be requested to reprint the Animals Protection .and Fisheries Act with amendments to date, in the pamphlet form issued last year.” “ That black swan bo placed on the open list during the shooting season.” “That on amendment ot the Fisheries Act be obtained, providing for payment to Acclimatisation Societies of fines imposed upon offenders convicted upon prosecutions under the provisions of part 2 of the statute’ in the same manner as fines imposed on convictions on prosecutions under the , regulations of Acclimatisation Societies.” “ .mat ail amendment of the Fisheries Act be obtained providing that ali weirs and constructions placed across fish bearing rivers or waters by local bodies or others, bo provided with proper fish ladders or ways.” “ That the use of decoy 3 for duck-shooting be limited to ten per ppm.” “ Til at mia-mias be not allowed to be built on shooting water closer than one hundred and fifty yards to one another.” “That regulations for deer-stalkers be gazetted much earlier than at present.” “ That (a) no license to shoot deer should be granted until at hast a fortnight after tho advertisement stating licenses can be applied for; (b) that all applications made prior to that date be not considered: (e) that every application be accompanied bv a deposit, to be returned if the license be not granted.” “ That tho Animals Protection Act be amended to provide (a) that any person found trespassing with a dog or gun on any land set apart as reserves or sanctuaries for birds or animals shall he liable to a penalty of not less than £5, and not exceeding £2O; (b) that any persons found trespassing cn any land set apart as receives or sanctuaries for birds or animals shall be liable to a penalty of not less than £1 and not exceeding £5.” “That having regard to the desirability of preventing the deterioration of red deer heads, it is requisite that the stalking season in tho Otago district should commence at least ton days later than at present.” “ That each Acclimatisation Society lie empowered In issue its own doer and game licenses.” “That the season for shooting gedwits be from January 1 to March 31, and that knot be shot during the same period.”
