A WORLD’S FAIR.

PANAMA-PACIFIC EXPOSITION. A COMMISSIONER IN CHRISTCHURCH. Mr C. W. Carter, a commissioner of tho Panama-Pacific International Exposition, which will be held in San Francisco in 1915, is in Christchurch, making preliminary inquiries in regard to tlie exhibits this part of the dominion will send to the fair. Mr Carter will remain in this city for a few days, and will meet the representatives of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce and other representative bodies. Ho will then go to Wellington, where- ho will make further inquiries. Later on another commissioner will visit New Zealand, to make final arrangements. It is intended to hold the Exposition in order to mark tho completion of the Panama Canal, and an effort will be made to surpass anything of fhc kind that has been held in any part of tho world before. The cost null probably amount to £13,000,000. The merchants of San Francisco have subscribed £3,500,000, and the Federal Government will give a large sum, as the affair will bo of a national character. The enthusiasm of the citizens of Snn Francisco is shown by tho fact that when the proposal to select that city as tho site was made the sum of £BOO,OOO was subscribed in two hours and a half. New Orleans made some claim to be the site, but the Government finally selected San Francisco. Besides its natural advantages, Mr Carter says, it is interesting on account of its marvellous recovery from the catastrophe it experienced a few years ago. Today it is a great modern city in every respect. Its magnificent harbour will be used during the Exposition for naval displays, in which it is hoped tho Great Powers will bo represented. Mr Carter, after seeing some of the southern parts of New Zealand, has formed a strong opinion that, apart from produce and manufactures, tho scenery should be represented at tho Exposition, by either good pictures or largo photographs. ITe says' that New Zealanders will bo able to obtain good accommodation at hotels in San Francisco at tho rate of Bs, 10s and 12s a day, and that steps are being taken to prevent excessive charges being made.
