’•CANTERBURY JOCKEY CJAJB. THE MIDSUMMER MEETING. Rewards —Messrs A. Boyle, C. O. Dalgcty, G. Gould, J. Gri g g, H. A. Knight, B. L. Lane J. B. Reid, R. Heaton Rhodes, D. Rutherford, G. B. Starky, E. C. Studliolms end T. Toschemakcr; chairman —Mr A. Boyle; honorary treasurer—Mr F. H. Pyne; honorary veterinary surgeons —Messrs J. R. Charlton, M.R.C.V.S., and A. A. Johnson, F R.C.V.S.; honorary timekeeper—Mr H. Kohn; judge—Mr W. H. Hartgill; handicapper—Mr J. E. Henrys; starter—Mr H. Piper; clerk of scales—Mr Alfred Evans; clerk of course—Mr H. Thompson; secretary—Mr \V. H. E. Wanltlyn. The Midsummer meeting of the Cnnzerbury Jockey Club was concluded on Saturday in beautiful weather, but the attendance was hardly up to the average. The absence of the bookmakers lent an air of quietness to the proceedings, but the racing was good, although the fields generally were not very large. The investments on the totalisator amounted to £9390, ns against £4466 on the second day last year, making a total of £17,257 for the mooting, compared with £7764 in 1910. Aphoea, on the strength of a smartly run fivo furlongs in the Filly Stakes on Thursday, was made favourite for the Richmond Plate, the two-year-old race with which the meeting opened. She had no chance, however, with Avarice, who, getting away much better than on the first day, always had the race in safe keeping, and plaqed the stake to the credit of Sir George Clifford’s credit, running the five furlongs smartly in lmin 2 1-osec. The- Lin wood Welter Handicap found Medallist in a galloping mood, and tho Hon J. D. Ormond’s cast-off scored comfortably at the finish from Armstrong and Alexis. The Middle Park Plate introduced a new candidate for two-year-old honours, who, it had been consistently rumoured, was more than ordinarily brilliant. This was the colt Antagonist, by Soult—Miss Annie, who was purchased by Sir George Clifford for 820 gs at the Cambria Park sale last year. Tho colt was coupled on tho totalisator with Countermine, who was inclined to be unruly, but the combination was not so well backed as the bracket Orton and Vice-Admiral, wbo both had experience to help them. Bronze was the only other starter. When the barrier Went up Antagonist began T6ry quickly, and it was early obvious that it was only a question of his staying out the six furlongs to win. He moved with a long, free action, and, staying every inch of the journey, won in a canter from .Vice-Admiral and Orton. . It is unfortunate that so promising a two-year-old should he under suspicion of unsoundness. Tn the St Albans Handicap the going suited Rose Noble, hut he had to he hard ridden to stall off a fast la to run from' Coroniform, who was only beaten by a neck after being badly placed in the early part of the race. Romany Maid, who has improved a lot since the spring, was a moderate third. Eighteen horses started in the Selling Rnce. which The Cornet won comfortably from the unluckv but consistent placegetter Alexis. All Guns was favourite, but after being first into the straight stopped badly over the last furlong. The uncertain Tenterhook was made favourite for the Flying Handicap, Kilts being next in demand. Kilts

was first to begin, and won easily, Tenterhook being beaten for second place by Queen of Spades, who came with a very fast run from the distanco. The meeting closed with the Post Handicap, which fell to Genius, after an interesting finish with White Cockade.
