TRAMWAY EXTENSIONS.

SEPARATE LOAN PROPOSALS. The decision of the Tramway Board approving of the four proposed extensions of the tram service to AVindmill Road, Cranford Street, Cashel Street and Haokthorne Road was the subject of a considerable amount of correspondence read at the meeting of the Board yesterday. A number of letters were read concerning the proposed Hackthorne Road extension. Mr G. T. Booth, in moving that the letters should be received, said that if they had the effect of reopening the question they would have done good, because he did not think the Board had been justified in adopting the Hackthorne Road proposal. If there was to be an extension up the hills, it should be up the road where the population was. He did not think that cither extension was necessary at present. Mr C. M. Gray said that he was convinced that if a poll was taken on the proposals as a whole, and they contained the Hackthorne Road proposal, the effect would he to block the other proposals. He hoped the Board would separate the proposals. The letters were received. Later in the meeting Mr .1. A. Fleslier moved that 'the proposals should be put forward in such a form that the ratepayers should be asked to vote- on them separately. Mr C. M. Gray seconded the motion. Mr A. W. Beaven said that the Board had been elected to manage the tramway system of Christchurch, and to put such proposals forward as it thought advisable. To put the proposals separately would arouse a. parochial spirit, and he was opposed to the idea. The motion was carried, Messrs Booth, Gray, Flesher and Staples voting for it. It was decided that the poll should he taken on June 24, at the same time as tlio poll for the election of members of the Board.
