DRAINAGE BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Christchurch Drainage Board was held last evening; present—Messrs H. J. Otley (in the chair), B. J. 11. Carew, W. J. Walter, F. J. Barlow, F. Storey, J. Down, W. .E. Samuels and S. A. Staples. , The secretary and treasurer’s report for the month stated that the amount, of rates received had been £2423 5s lid, and the total receipts on the rate account £2492 19s sd. The amount of expenditure on the late account had been £1454 11s 2d; on the No. 1 loan account, £459 7s lid; on the No. 3 loan account, £3SO3 7s 6d. The rates outstanding for 1905 totalled £4§ 8s 9d; for 1906-7, £446 12s sd; for 1907-8, £15,993 Os Id. The 1907-S rates collected totalled £10,381 12s. The debit oalance on the rate account was £10,345 4s 2d; the credit balance on No. 1 loan account was £521 10s 7d; and the credit balance on No. 3 loan account, £14,202 os lCd. The report was adopted. The engineer reported that Mr James Bkckmore had been licensed as a plumber, and Mr C. Dixon as a pipelayer. Ho desired-the Board to consider the question of water supply for the new paddocks at the sewage farm. A supply would necessitate a deep well costings £9O, 1600 feet of inch piping and eight drinking troughs, costing in all £l7O. ; The report was adopted, and it was agreed to carry out the works, suggested at the farm. ■ The resignation of Mr R. Pitcaithly was received, and a motion was carried expressing appreciation of his work on the Board. The Board’s solicitors wrote, 'stating that the bill of costs of the solicitors acting for the representatives of the rural areas of the Christchurch drainage district in connection with the recent commission, had been taxed by the . Registrar -of the Supreme Court. The total -bill of costs, including disbursements, had amounted to £2168 2s lOd, and the amount, deducted was £334 5s Bd, leaving a balance of £1833 17s 2d. The amount payable by tho Board to the representatives of tho rural areas was £1533 17s 2d. Tho total amount payable by the Board was £1683 17s 2d. It was decided to pay the amount at once. The Board’s solicitors also wrote, expressing the opinion that the construction of a septic tank in Woolst-on, at a cost- of £IOOO, would be a permanent | sewage work within the meaning of the Act, and could be carried out from the : sum of £1295 authorised by the Christchurch Drainage Act Amendment Act, 1907. for expenditure in the district. It was decided to carry out the work, as requested by th© Woolst-on Borough Council, if a loan could he obtained satisfactorily.
