Spectators at Hagley Park on Saturday afternoon were 'privileged to see B really excellent game, in which the West Christchurch team, previously unbeaten in the first grace oi the Canterbury Cricket Associations district competitions, was -beaten by Linwood by 68 runs. On the adjoining wicket Riccarton completely outclassed ,St Albans, and with two players absent made the large total-of 426, towards which Anthony contributed It I not out. At Lancaster Park, Sydenham scored an easy three points win over East Christchurch. With two matches to play, West Christchurch is leading Sydenham by only one point. In junior cricket Dr A. O'Brien compiled another century for St Albans, scoring 124 not out against Linwood. The following are the details of the Karnes: — * FIRST GRADE. WEST CHRISTCHURCH v. LINWOOD. With two wickets .down for 25 runs, West Christchurch resumed their first innings against Linwood, but Cook, Whitta and Reese were disposed of before becoming troublesome, and five wickets were down for 72. When Lusk and Weston were associated the play became much freer, and 54 runs were added before Lusk was clean bowled by Howell for 38. The best stand of the innings, however, was made when Norman joined Weston. The bowling and fielding were splendid, and the visitors were straining every nerve to maintain their advantage. After 54 runs had been added Weston was clean bowled by Orchard for 42. Seven for 178. Thomas, Vernon and Fuller did not ndd many, .but they stayed long enough j to enable Norman to carry the score j to 238, when the last, wicket fell. Norman's contribution of 72 not out , was an invaluable one, and his best ' Bffort of the season. Orchard, who went on towards the end, took four wickets for 33, while Kinvig also bowled well, and the fielding throughout was excellent. In their second the Linwood batsmen again made light of the West Christchurch attack, and a"t the call of time had lost two wickets for 119, Ellis, Bishop and Orchard all playing excellent cricket. Parker was bowled second ball, but Fryer hit freely for 27, and then foolishly ran himself out. None of the remaining I batsmen did much, but during the later stages of the game Anthony monopolised the bowling, 'and when the last wicket fell had scored 172 not out, marked by steady, solid play enroughout. At one time the scoring-board showed 350—4—0, but with two men absent the final score was 426, giving Riccarton a comfortable win by 148 runs.
