SIR JAMES KNOWLES. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, February 14. The death is announced of Sir James Knowles, the proprietor of the " Nineteenth Century." (Sir James Knowles was born in 1831, and was educated as an architect at a private school, at University College, in his father's office, and in Italy. He was a. Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects, and executed many architectural works, chiefly in London and its neighbourhood—amongst which may be mentioned Aldworth, tho Surrey residence of Lord Tennyson; Kensington House, with its gardens and adjuncts; the Thatched House Club, St James's Street: the public garden and fountain in Leicester Square; the Albert Mansions, in Victoria Street; and numerous churches. Sir James also engaged in literature from an early age, contributing many articles to journals and reviews, and in 1860 he compiled " The Story of King Arthur," which reached a sixth edition. In 1869 ho originated the Metaphysical Society. In 1870 he succeeded Dean Alford in the editorship of tho "Contemporary Review," which he raised to a position of influence and importance. In 1877 he established the "Nineteenth Century," a monthly review, which immediately attained, and still preserves, a very wide circulation.) MR A. BALDWIN, M.P. LONDON, February 14. The death is announced of Mr Alfred Baldwin, member of the House of Commons for the Bewdley division of Worcester, who died suddenly. (The late member was an ironmaster, and was chairman of the firm of Messrs E P. and W. Baldwin, Limited, Stourport, of Messrs Alfred Baldwin and Co., Limited. Pcmtypool, and of the Metropolitan Bank of England and Wales. He was a Conservative in politics, and sat for the Bewdley division since 1892.
