EXPLOSION ON A BATTLESHIP.
THE GEORGIA’S ACCIDENT. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. NEW YORK, July 15. It is suspected that a spark from the Georgia’s funnel ignited the powder, and the concussion and lire injured all who wore in the turret. (An explosion of powder aboard the United States battleship Georgia during target practice off Princctown, Massachusetts, killed five of the crew and injured twelve, including three officers.) FURTHER DETAILS. ' NEW YORK, July 16. Further details to hand of the Georgia explosion show that while a charge of 2001 b was being lifted from the hoist two seamen noticed that the cover was smouldering. They shouted a warning and threw themselves on the floor. A terrific burst of flame followed, and the turret was filled with smoko and noxious gases. A number of men tried to escape through the hatchway, and some gained the deck and jumped into the sea. The chaplain was the first to enter the turret. Two mere deaths of the injured are reported and six are in a precarious condition.
