TRAMWAY ACCIDENT. • HORSE AND TRAP CAPSIZED. 'For some time the congested traffic at the outlets of Cathedral Square has been the cause of anxiety to both the public and the police. The Bank of ■New Zealand and the Masonic Hotel corners are frequently designated as dangerous to life and limb, and, with the trams, vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians, the likelihood of accidents is Very great. The need of traffic regulation has been- a topic of conversation for some time, and last evening an illustration of the urgency for reform was given, when an accident happened fet tho corner of Gloucester and Colombo Street 1 ';, Two gentlemen driving in a pony trap along Gloucester Street endeavoured to cross Colombo Street. They saw two cars cross, one from Papanui and one from Cathedral Square, and, thinking that the lino was clear, drove on ■ A third oar, bound for Edgeware Road, however, came along from the Squarei at a fair speed, and before the trap could he got out of the way ran into it, and carried it about five yards. The trap was severely damaged, but the horse was unhurt. Mr E. A l . Arrowsmith, one of the occupants of the trap, speaking to a reporter after the accident, said that tho car struck tho trap square on, and, after carrying it .forward about six yards, capsized it. He was thrown under the fender of the car, and Mr J. T. Moore, his companion, was thrown clear of the trap upon his head. He did not hear a, bell. Mr Moore, who received a out upon the head, was taken to Dr house, and there attended. The confusion that generally attends street accidents was heightened by the fact that just after the horse and trap had been removed from the rails, a second car from the Square collided with the first car, hut though it slightly bent the fonder, caused little or no damage.
