Mr Mark Coiicn, wtio lias oeen assi* dated with tho Dunedin “ Btar ” foT over forty-two years, was presented by the employees with a travelling case, ii set of goid liniss and a gold-mountea fountain pen, all suitably inscribed, on. the eve of his departure on a visit to England on a twelve months’ leave of absence. The citizens of Dunedin will next week present Mr Cohen with ' a purse of sovereigns, in recognition of his conduct of the editorial columns of the “ Star.” Mr J. F. Kirby, who has been largely identified with patriotic and other movements of a kindred nature, and is about to visit England to assist Mr Janies Mills at the Maritime Conference, lias bee-n presented by a number of leading citize-ns with a travelling bag, a walking stick and a Mpsgiel travelling rug. The Hon J. .A. Millar will return to Christchurch by. the first express on Friday in order to appoint judges at the Exhibition prior to temporarily handing over the reins to.the Attorney-General, who will be Minister in’ Charge till tho Hon G. Fowlde returns’ from his trip to the Sounds. Mr Fowkls will then remain in Christchurch as Minister: in Charge of the Exhibition for coma weeks. The Dunedin Navals have again won the Sargood Cup. The previous Sargood Cup became the absolute, property of the Navals by their win last , year. A new cup was then given, and’.the Navals have made a promising start towards absolute ownership. The Oropuki Rifles were second, Canterbury. Highland Rifles third and Dunedin City Guards fourth. The Mayor states that the city overdraft has been reduced by £7OOO-dur-ing the past . year. He foreshadows a redaction in rates, to make up for th« large increase'in the drainage rates.
