TRADES AND LABOUR COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Canterbury Trades and Labour Council was held on October 6, Mr H. R, Rusbridge presiding. New delegates were received from the Amalgamated, Engineers’ and the Amalgamated Carpenters’'Unions. The Hon W. Hull-Jones wrote, in reply to the Council’s letter regarding the con-' struction of locomotives by private firms, stating that this was necessary in the interest of the engineering firms of the colony. A sub-committee, consisting of Messrs J. Thorn, M. J.

Forde and J. A. M’CulloughV was appointed to reply to the Minister. Letters were received from. . Sir Joseph Ward, the Hon W. Hall-Jones, Sir William Steward, and Messrs C. M. Gray, T. H. Davey, H. G. Ell, W. W. Tanner, G. Laurenson, G. Witty, 0. A. C. Hardy, F. R. Platman and R.. H. H. Rholes, regarding the operations of the Standard Oil Company in connection' with the oil fields of the colony. The Gardeners’ Union wrote, donating one guinea towards the proposed Seddon Memorial Fund. The Hon R. M’Nab wrote, acknowledging the receipt of the Council’s resolution approving of the Land Bill. The Otago Council forwarded a resolution regarding the Bill, requesting that the Canterbury Council should endorse it. It was decided to support the resolution,, with the addition that the £50,000 limit should be reduced to £25,000, and',the sixty-six years’ lease to thirty-tlireo years. The Tanners’ : Union forwarded a donation to the Trades Hall Sinking Fund. Communications were received from Sir Joseph Ward, regarding, the Reciprocity Treaty!' The Wellingfcon Council wrote, with reference to the proposed amendment to the Workers’ Compensation Act. The Political Labour League’s letter regarding the coming municipal elections was referred to the Executive. The Executive, . the Hall Committee and the Concert Committee presented reports on the work accomplished.. . The Amalgamated Society of Carpenters presented a photograph of its Executive officers! Accounts amounting to £3 16s were passed for payment.
