DIRECTOR’S REPORT. The following is the report of the director, Mr W. Lowrie, Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln:—-“I en- - close herewith balance-sheet for the year for the egg-laying competition just clceed. You will notice that in tho balance-sheet the cost of feeding: the •par© pullets and the returns from sales pi eggs from the. spar© pullets are included. After deducting the proportion of the cost of feeding for th'e spar© pullets I find that the average return per - bird in the competition is Hs Hid per sales of eggs. The dost for feed is 5s lljd. ‘The profit per 'bird, therefore, from all the fowls in tho competition is fc Hid. If w© take the leading pen 1, . '■

we find that the eggs wore sold for 19s 3Jd per bir.d, and deducting the average cost, 5s lljd, there is left 18s 4d per bird as profit, lees, of course, the, cost of management. On tho other hand, if w© take the lowest pen—the eggs yielded Bs. 4 5(i —which, deducting the average cost, 5s Hid, shows a profit of 2s 4-3 d for each bird. Thus the poorest birds in the competition returned in the sales of eggs the ocst of food and 45 per cent of the cost of food to spare. “In ch© balance-sheet which w© have submitted you will ho able to see clearly several items of cost.” Tho balance-sheet is as follows: Expenditure—Pea meal, 9771 b at 3s 3d
