HOSPITAL BOARD.
SOUTH CANTERBURY. At the meeting of . the South Canter bury Hospital Board yesterday, a circular from the North Canterbury Board was road asking for co-operation in urging the Government to establish home* for chronic cases and incurables, sal one for each island. The Board, do ferred expressing approval or disap proval of the idea until next meeting, to give members time to think it over. Notice of motion was given to rescind a rule forbidding the reception of maternity cases at the hospital. The resident surgeon brought up this question, and recommended the reception of such on two grounds, the need for such treatment as the hospital could give in the case of many mothers in inconvenient homes and the -advantage . it •. would be to the nurses to/ggin experi-. .. en.ee-in midwifery. A long diScuisioh. took place on a complaint that the hoe-, - pital is unduly mad© use of by people who could afford to pay for private treatment, and especially by outpatients, the fe© for whom is only one shilling. The Board agreed that it would b© impossible to discriminate between rich and poor as in-patients, though, some distinction might fa© made in the case of out-patients. The charge of one shilling for these was considered ridiculous, and notice was given to re*' scind the rule and fix new fees. Plan were ordered to b© obtained for a new laundry, and a sketch pla'n was received for a now Old Men’s Home. The chairman and the Mayor of Hxaaru were requested to apply to the Government for an increase of the grant for this building (winch is estimated to .cost £5000), from £SOO to £I6OO.
