NUISANCES IN MERIVALE.
TO THIS EDITOR.' Sir,—l am very glad to see that a. correspondent had drawn attention to the disgusting nuisance arising from the sewer in Carlton Mill Road. Like other residents of the neighbourhood, I have given up walking along this road, but it must be horrible indeed, for people to bo living right alongside the sewer openings. In past years the Drainage Board or other responsible body has had a fire engine in the summer months to flush the sewer, but what is really needed is the proper ventilation' of the underground pipes by means of high air tubes. Other sewers in the city receive frequent attention, but this one is neglected,' because wo have no City Councillor, living in the district. There is another _Merivale nuisance to which I would like to refer, and that is the driving of cows through the suburb. It seems to me barbarous that a dairy should be tolerated right in the heart of a thickly populated quarter. Four, and sometimes six times a day eight or ten cows are ' driven through the streets, and as often as not they taka the footpath as well as the road. The results are not pleasant.—l am., etc. HEWITT’S ROAD.
