THE CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT. [Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, January 3. The result of the play in the tenth round of the chess tournament is as follows: James v. Rutherfurd (French Defence). — James missed mate shortly after opening, aud had a hard fight to overcome his opponent, who - missed a winning chance in the end gome and shortly afterwards resigned. Jowitt v. Mason (Bird’s Opening).—Jowitt attacked and Mason defended with great brilliancy. In the middle game Jowitt gave up knight for two pawns and ought to have won, but missed a winning pawn move, and Mason scored a hard-earned victory on the sixty-sixth move. Davies v. Mummer (Davies Gambit). —Davies sacrificed knight for pawn at the third move, obtaining a fierce attack, which ho maintained, and won on the fiftieth move. Freeman v. Edwards (Irregular Opening).— In tho middle game Freeman captured a valuable pawn, giving him a superior position. He won brilliantly, making the sacrifice of queen for knight. Barnes v. Miles (Dutch Defence). —Miles lost a piece at the twelfth move, but gained a rather powerful attack, which required close watching. Barnes, however, proved equal to all emergencies, and won at move fifty-one. Rolling v. Grierson (Scotch Game). —This will reouire a third sitting. The final round was begun at the evening sitting, and the games stand as follow: Kunimer v. Jowitt (Centre Game). —The former won in fine style. Grierson v. Barnes (Queen’s Pawn Opening).—A close game, which is being very evenly contested. Rutherfurd v. Davies (Ruy Lopez).—Davies got an overwhelming attack on Rutherfurd, and, won easily, Rutherfurd resigning on the twenty-fourth move. Mason .v. Milos (Zukcrtort). —A t the time of adjournment chances were about even. A draw would- suffice to give Mason the championship. ' James v. Freeman (Vienna Opening).— James had' the attack throughout, aud won comfortably. Edwards v. Kelling (Irregular Opening).— The former has tho attack and somewhat the preferable game. The position, of the players .at the end of the tenth round is as follows:
