THE' UNION STEAMSHIP COMPANY’S FLEET. _ THURSDAY.—Mararoa arrives from Wellington and leaves on return trip. , Yesterday the s.s. Mokoia arrived from Dunedin at 5.45 a.m., and the s.s. Rotomahana Wellington at 9.45 a.m. The t auxiliary screw schooner Huia sailed for Kaipara with a cargo of produce at 9.30 a.m. yesterday. Mr J. Chaworth, formerly chief officer of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s s.s. Karamea, remained at Home when the steamer was last in England, in order to do his naval reserve drill.. Mr A.C. Read, late chief officer of the s.s. Pakeha, has taken his place. Mr E. A. Brown, who was third officer of the Karamea on her last visit to New Zealand, has remained in England to sit for an examination. Mr W. G. Summers has been promoted from the position of fourth officer to fill his place. The schooners Joseph Sims and Amelia Sims are ready for sea, and will sail as soon as crews can he shipped. The Joseph Sims will go to Westport, whore she is to load timber for Lyttelton. The Amelia Sims is to take a cargo of wheat to Motueka, whence aha is to go to Collingwood for a load of timber for this port. A barquentine, bound south, passed Lyttelton Heads about 5.30 p.m. on Tuesday. A steamer, bound north, passed Lyttelton Heads about 3.45 p.m. yesterday. The scow Ngara sailed from Lyttelton at 8.10 p.m. yesterday for > Greymouth, taking a railway shunting engine and a quantity of fittings. At Greymouth she is to load timber or sleepers for / Lyttclton. The 5.3. Mokoia left for Sydney via east coast porta at 5 p.m., and the s.s. Kotuku for Greymouth at 5.35 p.m. yesterday. .The New Zealand Shipping Company’s s.s. Whakatane left at 5.40 p.m. yesterday for Dunedin, where she is to put out the balance of her cargo. Her further movements have not yet been announced. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s ».s. Karamea, from West of England ports, .via Auckland and .Wellington, entered villi in the moles at five minutes after noon yesterday, and was berthed at No. 7 wharf, to put . out 900 tons of cargo. The steamer arrived at Auckland on December 18, after an uneventful passage. It is expected that she will leave early next week for Dunedin, where she is to -finish discharging. Captain G. Burton, R.N.R., commander of the Karamea, has the following officers:—Chief officer, Mr A. C. Read, late of the s.s. Pakeha.; second, Mr C. Perriam; third, Mr W. G. Summers; fourth, Mr F-. A. C. Heslop. Mr J. Naismlth is still chief engineer, and has under him Messrs S. A. Widdrington, second; E. Kirk, late of the s.s. Perthshire, fourh, and J. Anderson fifth. Mr S. Smith is chief refrigerating engineer and Mr R. L. Power second. Mr J. Hunter is boilermaker f and Mr C. J. Hobden chief steward. The telegram from Akaros stating that tho •.«. Petone left there yesterday afternoon for

Lyttelton is probably incorrect. She did not arrive in Lyttelton last night, and, presumably, the steamer seen going north at 3.45 p.m. was the Petone, bound for Greymouth. The s.s. Cygnet will leave for Kaikoura and Cheviot this evening. The s.s. Rotomahana left for Wellington at 6.15 p.m. yesterday. It is stated that the New Zealand Shipping Company’s s.s. Kaikoura, from London, now at Wellington, is to proceed to tho Bluff after discharging her Wellington cargo. ' Mr Tomlinson, late second officer of the Loch Garve, joins the intercolonial barque Lsira as second mate. The Tyser liner Tomoana, now at Auckland, on her way to Wellington from London, ■ via Australian ports, is in charge of Crptain Conby, who baa the following officers with him:—Chief, Mr Y>. M’Queen; second, Mr W. J. Collin; third, Mr James N. Rodick; fourth, Mr C. H. Foxley. Mr Ghappel is in charge of the engine department,’arifi has with him Messrs Lloyd, Taylor, Spear and Scott, Messrs Cameron and Don being the refrigerating engineers. The trip out was devoid of incident. The unfortunate master of the scow Oban, Captain D. W. M’Kenzie, who bad a Homo trade certificate, was engaged by Mr Pilcher in Auckland about six weeks "ago, and was most favourably recommended as a skilful and able, mariner. It is understood that Captain M’Kenzie was once in command of the brigantine Vision, and is cousin to the wellknown seafaring brothers of Auckland of that name. Captain M’Kenzie was about thirty-eight or forty years of age, and is stated, to be married. The owner of the Oban, Mr Pilcher, estimates the value of the scow at £450, and her cargo at about £SO. Neither vessel nor cargo is insured. The Oban bad recently been fitted with a new centre-board, and had also been extensively repaired. The Oban,_ about two or three years ago, , capsized in the Sounds, with Captain Bonner, and was afterwards purchased by Captain M’Nab, of Nelson, and again capsized in the Sounds, although under entirely different ciroum- , stances to her last mishap- Recently the Oban had beqn engaged in running stone from Blind. Bay to Nelson in connection with the harbour works. The vessel used also to run coal from Puponga to Nelson. Captain C. H. Kempson, E.N.R., is still in command of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s s.s. Athenic. 1 Mr V. W. Hickson, R.N.R., is chief officer, Mr J. L. Jones is first officer, Mr G. A. Alcock second officer, Mr W. B. Starr, E.N.R., third officer, Mr J. Alcock fourth officer. Mr Charles M’Gowan, R.N.R., is in charge of tho engine department, and he has with him Messrs W. Browne, J. S. Jackson, H. Purvis. J. Reid, and L. E. Owens. Mr J. S. Goulding is first refrigerating ■* engineer, and Mr G. Stephens second. Mr S. C. J. FreemanMatthews is purser, Dr J. C. Hines surgeon, and Mr H. T. G. Harle chief steward. The Athenic left Plymouth on November IS. A moderate nortb-easterly gale, with heavy seas, was encountered in the Bay of Biscay, and thence to Teneriffe, which was made on November 23, moderate variable wind prevailed. Moderate to fine weather was experienced on the run to Cape Town, which port was reached on December 8. After disembarking twenty-five passengers and embarking thirty-one passengers, the vessel continued her voyage for Hobart the same day. Strong N.W. to S.W. winds, with rough sea, prevailed to the 140th meridian, and thence to Hobart. Hobart was reached at 9.45 a.m. on December 27. A start was made for Wellington af 5.45 a.m.on December 28; fine weather and light to moderate N.W. winds and moderate sea prevailed until arrival at Wellington, at 6 a.m. on Monday. The steaming time from Plymouth to Wellington was 41 days 12 hours 37 minutes. The total distance, 12,913 miles, was travelled at an average rate of 12.96 knots per hour.
