THE HIGH COMMISSIONER’S MESSAGE. WELLINGTON, January 2. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable message from the High Commissioner for New Zealand: —Mutton.— The market is firm. Stocks on. hand are light and held firmly by a 'few. There is an endeavour amongst- holders to raise tn© price. The average price to-day for Canterbury mutton is 4d per lb; Dunedin, Southland and Wellington Meat Export Company’s and other North Island mutton 3}d. Lamb. "The market is quiet. Australian lamb is in large supply and of good quality. River Plat© shipments are increasing. Tire New Zealand stock in store is being reduced. The average price to-day of New Zealand lamb, Canterbury brand, is 4}d, other brands 4}d (nominal), Australian lamb 4d, Argentine 3|d. Beef.—The market is very dull. Supplies of River Plate chilled are heavy. Hindquarters 3}d, forequarters 2}d. The average price to-day for New Zealand hindquarters is 3id, forequarters 3d. Butter.—-The market is very firm, but excited. , Cm account of the falling off of shipments the supply is short of the -demand. The price of choicest New Zealand butter to-day is 118 s, Danish 1245, Argentine 114 s par cwf. Cheese.—The market is firm at 625, and prices continue to advance. Hemp.—The market is very firm. There is no alteration since last quotation.
