SPORTS GATHERINGS.

However seriously the people may have taken themselves on Sunday in formulating virtuous programmes for the New Year, they certainly did not wear sackcloth and ashes yesterday for the sins of the past. They decided to wander along the primrose path of jollity for at least one day of the new ora. The celebrations of some persons involved a breakage of the fresh-laid eggs of good resolution, but they soothed their consciences with a determination to make amende on January 2. Trains whirled to and fro over the plains, carrying full cargoes of mirthful humanity, and the festive freight was turned loose into fields in the prettiest corners of Canterbury to find recreation in various forms, ranging from ancient Caledonian sports to modern trotting. Even in the morning, when the excursionists were merely exhilarated by sunshine and the anticipation of a “ good time,” their spirits ran to music and bag-piping. In the trains, gentlemen in kilts gaily skirled, in a buoyant belief that they were doing more good than harm, and the Sassenach, too good-tempered so early in the. day to be querulous, pardoned bis erring “ blither” and suffered in silence. But the Sassenach needed the indulgence which he graciously extended to other sinners. He burst into patriotic song, and gave “Red, White and Blue” in a scale entirely his own. tie roared that “ Britons never, never, never, never will be slaves,” and ho tried to squeeze in the extra “ novers ” without deranging the orthodox scheme of melody. He tried once, and his hearers were very grateful that he did not act in accordance with that ancient adyibs, “ If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” Persons who were unavoidably present at these assassinations of tunes were not horrified. They looked at the smiling murderers with friendly eyes, and though they might have momentarily shuddered at the slaughter the gamut, they were more than compensated by the exubcration of good humour which characterised the perpetration of the outrages. The hilarity was infectious, as it always is. Men who went forth in the morning with their brows knit had them relaxed by the merriment of fellow-passengers, and had to thank a bad song for a good mood. ■ RANGIORA. On New Year’s Day, 1859, Mr C. 0. Torlesse,. who was the first resident settler in Rangiora, invited all bis fellowsettlers, with their wives and families to a , sports’ gathering in one of his fields. The population of the place in those days was not large, but the various competitions and amusements were entered into with zest, and the gathering was voted such a pleasant one that it was there and then decided to hold public sports every New- Year’s Day. Since that time, with short intervals, the snorts Have been held. Many of the old time amusements, such as climbing the greasy pole, grinning through a horse collar, catching the pig with a greasy tail, tilting- at the ring, pole and other jumping have gone out of fashion, but it is doubtful whether the more modern competitions are as productive of so much genuine pleasure as some of those discarded. The advent of the bicycle, and the putting down, of a racing track gave the annual gathering a new impetus, and the cycling' events have ever since been the most attractive part of the programme. The sports were at first managed by a committee of townspeople, but- eventually the Rangiora- Athletic Association was formed for the purpose, and has now a membership of about a hundred and twenty. The. North Canterbury Bicycle Club (now defunct) .also,-: dur- ' iug its existence,. took a" leading part in the sports, and - several important cycling:championships were run off oh the track. The cycling events are now, however, ; pretty much confined to second-rate riders, mostly local. The gathering has hitherto been the-most popular-in North. Canterbury, but this year a strong rival has-sprung up in the Waikari Caledonian Society, which have also selected,"New Year’s Day for its annual games. The clashing, however, made very little difference to the attendance at the Rangiora sports yesterday, the gafe money being- £7O 2e, as compared with £63 last year. The weather, although at times threatening, remained fine, and in the afternoon it was bool and pleasant. The arrangements made by the committee, as usual; left nothing to be desired. A programme of thirty-five events was provided, and there were good fields for most of the track races, specially the cash. Two or three dancing and pipe music events had to be. abandoned owing to lack of entries, the Waikari gathering having proved boo attractive to those who usually competed. _ The bicycle racing was of an interesting description, the track being in good order, and the finishes close. - There were several spills, hut no serious injury to riders resulted. The Rangiora Brass Band played throughout the afternoon, and in the absence of the piper Mr J. Wilson, fiddled for the two dancing events got off. Amongst the officials were:—President, Mr R. H. Walker; judges,-track events, Messrs H. Boyd, J. Carmichael, W. Blackett, J. Sansom, S. W. Jones and 11. Hayward; fire brigade competitions, Messrs J. M’Ale-ar, J. Buckley add Samuels; dancing, Mr R. One of the most successful day’s sports yet arranged by the South Canterbury Caledonian Society took place yesterday in the presence of about 7000 spectators. Special efforts had been made to signalise the first use of the new grandstand, that has been erected at a cost of £I4OO by a monster gathering, and although the weather was dull, cold and threatening throughout the day this result was achieved. The gate takings reached, the substantial sum of £290, and the stand receipts were £57. Before the usual games were started a gathering of the directors and friends took place to celebrate the opening of the grandstand. The president, Mr W. Gunn, occupied the chair. A short toast list was gone through, the Hon W. Hall-Jones, Minister of Public Works, proposing that of “ The South Canterbury Caledonian Society.” _ • The sports were of an exceedingly interesting nature, and though no records were broken many excellent performances were recorded. The cycling races particularly caught the interest of the public, each event producing a most exciting finish. The preliminary heats of the Caledonian Wheel R-ace were decided, and the final will be run to-day. Throughout the afternoon the Timaru Brass Band and the Canterbury Pipe Band enlivened proceedings by contributing a number of selections. The following are the principal results : CYCLING EVENTS. Each worked systematically, but the : back-markers did not pace “ all out,” and the last round found them still a long way in the rear. As the bell rang Arnst made a fine effort, and this was followed by a grand sprint by Connell. Sutherland was dropped, and the other three just failed by a dozen yards at the finish to catch the field. In the final hundred and fifty yards Mehrtens and Campion closed up to the two leaders, and a desperate finish resulted in Bonis winning a capital contest by awheel. Time—4min 20 4-ssec.
