RIFLE SHOOTING.

GOVERNMENT PRIZE FIRING. The annual shooting competitions for the Government grant to the Canterbury military district on the north side of the Rakaia River - were held at the Re-deliffe rifle range yesterday. The' weather was fine, though the wind was of a variable nature, and at times good marksmanship was impracticable. The attendance of Volunteers, rifle club men and civilians was not so large as usual, but there was a fine muster of cadets of the secondary schools. Captain M'Gee represented the District Defence Department. Captain Batchelor (No. 1 Battalion infantry) ably carried out the duties •of secretary and Captains Bishop (City Guards), Meddinge (Linwood Rifles), Loasby (City Rides), and Saudford, (staff), and King (Linwood Rifles), and Wathew (Cyclists) acted as range officers. The following are details'of the competitions;— MATCH No. I—lndependent, vanishinghead and shoulders, 200yds, target exposed three seconds, timed from trench, any position; seven shots, no sighier. . Sa-pper Burford (Engineers), Sergeant Murphy (City Guards), Rifleman Rattray (Christchurch Rifle Club), Corporal Whidey (Kaiapoi), Corporal Rennie (Imperial Rifles), . Corporal Moore (College Rifles), QuaitermaatorSergeant Rattray (N Batcery) and Private T. Jack (Linwood Rifles), the possib.e, 14 points; each took .ISs lOd. Rifleman Liddie' (Lincoln Club), Sergeant Hartigan (Cyclists'), Lance-Corporal Haig (Engineers), Corporal Baines (Engineers), R.floman M'Kay (Christchurch Rifle Club), Trooper Cooper (Ellesmere Mouuteds), Private R.
