AMUSEMENTS.

“THEJ.P.” The return to farcical comedy, which the appearance of the Strand Theatre Comedy Company will chronicle at the Theatre Royal on Boxing Night, should prove a welcome change to Christchurch theatre-goers. The company opens in “The J.P.,” which lias been remarkably popular throughout Australia. Additional interest is lent to the performance by the fact that two London gaiety stars are amongst the principals. Both Mr J. J. Dallas and Miss Florence Lloyd have gained _a reputation on the English stage in opera, musical comedy, pantomime and comedy. Mr Dallas, as a comedian, is regarded to have few rivals. Mies Florence Lloyd playt'4 the same part as she will assume in the production of “The J.P.” here that she appeared in during the comedy’s eminently successful run of six hundred nights at the Strand Theatre, London. All the members of the company have been chosen particularly for their adaptability to tne coming production. The plans for the first three nights of the Reason are announced to open at Messrs Milner and Thompson’® at nine o’clock on Thursday, December 31. THE MAGIC KETTLE. On Anniversary Night Pbofessor Andrews will give his mystifying Inagio kettle entertainment at the Theatre Royal. This aot is made possible by liquid air, a clear fluid like boiling water in .appearance, and so powerful that a heated bar of steel, when plunged into it, ' will flash fire and burn aw r ay. In writing of Professor Andrews's lecture and demonstration the “ Rand Daily Mail,” of Johannesburg, said :—‘' The private lecture and special demonstration given by Mr Fred. Andrews before the members of the Chemical and Metallurgical Society proved an eminent success, and the big assembly of ladies and gentlemen crowding the boxes, stalls, and circle of the Empire were entertained a full hour by a skilfully-conducted display of great instructive meant and spectacular interest.” Professor Andrews will give a second demonstration on Tuesday, and the entertainments will be under the patronage of the Mayor and members of the military circus! Tuesday night will be observed as military night. WEST ’ S~PICTU RES. West’s Picture® and the Brescians will open a farewell season in the Canterbury Hall next Saturday. This combination gained a quite, unusual amount of popularity on the occasion of its last visit to Christchurch, largely on account'of the splendid moving ' pictures , shown. During the coming season a number' of entirely new pictures will be shown, and the Brescians will give fresh musical programmes. MADAME AGNES PADDON. ' Among the other holiday attractions for Monday will be the concert to be given by Madame Agnes Paddon, the English contralto vocalist, who t is at present visiting New Zealand. Madame Paddon oomes with good credentials, and she will be supported by Mrs Gower Burns, Miss Tori a Sommers and Messrs A. Millar, Claude Allan and R. Vincent, whilst Miss Katie Young will act as accompaniste. 'Tne concert, will be held in the Canterbury Hall, and the plan "of reserved seats is open at the Dresden. OPERA HOUSE. The week’s programme at the OperaHouse came to a successful conclusion, last night, after a succession of good attendances. The merit of the- performance has deserved.the public support it has received, and the change of items to-night will be well up to the standard.
