DUNEDIN NOTES.
[From Qua Correspondent.] DUNEDIN, October 21. The Defence Department wishes to charter the trawler Napier or Express, for target practice, this year, but although the owner is vailing to charter, he has been unable, in view of last year’s experience over big gun practice, to get a crew willing to take the risk. In view of the fact that timber being washed ashore from the wreck of the County of Ayr is being taken charge of by residents, a Custom House officer has been despatched to the scene of the wreck to put an end to the practice. The doubtful point is. whether the agents or others are liable to pay duty on the timber which is now being “ landed ” on the beach. The vessel’s fittings and cargo are to be sold on Thursday.
