MR R. W. HANBURY. United Preas Association—By El«oMo Telegraph— Copyright. LONDON, April 28. The death is announced of Mr R. W. Hanbury, President of tho Board of Agriculture. * (The Right Honourable Robert William Hanbury, M.P., was the only son of Mr Robert Hanbury, of Bodehall House, Tamworth, and was 'born on Feb. 24, 1845. He was educated at Rugby and Corpus Christi College, Oxford, where he was in the second class Lit. Hum. in, 1868. In 1872 he was elected Conservative member for Tamworth, and represented that constituency until 1878, when ho became member for North Staffordshire. From 1880 til). 1885 he was out of Parliament, but in the latter year he was returned to the House of Commons as Conservative member for Preston, a borough which ho has continuously represented, since. He was appointed Financial Secretary to the Treasury in 1895, and in the same year was sworn a member of the Privy Council. On the reconstruction of the Salisbury Cabinet, in 1900, he became President of the Board of Agriculture.)

Ho took up fanning on: übe Ferry Road, next to tho property occupied by Mr J. Ollivier, but subsequently moved to MiddJe.ton Farm, on the Riccarton Road, and somo yeairs later obtained, a lease of tho i-acecourse. Relinquishing tho occupation of farming, hei entered the service of Messrs J. B. Ballamtyne and Co.* and had been in their employment ever since, Ms term of service extending overt thirty years. He joined No. 1 Company of Volunteers in 1864, and later on transferred to the E Battery, of which he was sergeant. He' joined tho Christckurch Volunteer Fire Brigade, serving as fireman, branchman and s foreman, and being appointed superintend-. eut on the retirement of Mr W. Harris. He retired in 1895, after twenty-five years' service, and was succeeded by Superintendent Smith. He was sixty-two yeans of age* and leaves a widow, two sons and two daughters. The funeral, which will be attended by representatives of the city aadi other Brigades, will take place on Sunday.

By the death of Mr James Vallance, of Springvale, Sefton, another old colonist hag joined the ranks of the "vast majority." Mr Vallance left Scotland for the colonies in 1849, and after spending five yearsin Australia came on to New Zealand, landing in Canterbury in 1855. He lived at Heathcote for some years, and then removed to Sefton, where lie has resided ever since. Four years ago Mr and Mrs Val- ; lance celebrated their golden wedding. He leaves a wife and- eleven children, and; eighty-two grand-children. much respected iu the Sefton district.
