On Saturday, Canterbury won the 'football match against Hawke's Bay by 34 points to nil. O'lago defeated New South "Wales by five points to nothing. A military order has been issued, closing ail country stores in the Queenstown district of Capo Colony. It requires goods- likely to bo used by the enemy to be token -to certain towns, and forbids country residents to possess more than one week’s provisions. Lord Kitchener’s despatch on the progress of tha war referred to the delay in the operations between April and u tint, through the necessity for -training "the, new Yeomanry. Many were unable to ride and shoo!. Afterwards satisfactory progress was made. Japan ;a reorganising her Army -and Navy. Tha Ministerial -heads of these Departments may in future be civilians. M. Camille Peileta-n, the 'French Marine Minister, in his Budget report, -expresses a. doubt as to 'the efficiency or -the submarine boat Gustavo Zcde, and other .types oi -submarine boats.
Three rebels have been executed- at Graaf Re-inert and ten sentenced rto servitude for life in tha Bermudas. _ Lord Kitchener has permitted the immediate return oi three hundred refugees to the Rand beyond -the usual monthly number. Lord Kitchener sent back two hundred Y'comanry recruits as radically unfit, tic complains bitterly of the slipsnou examination o! recruits in England. The " Times/’ with a view to speedily terminating the campaign, urges the employment, of seasoned, British troojis from India
prior to their return to England, tried South African campaigners replacing them in India. Owing .to the difficulty of obtaining a representative gathering of members and the danger of inflammatory speeches, it is not expected that the Cape Parliament will assemble even' by 'October, unless the situation changes. The Governor of the colony will meantime issue warrants for expenditure. M. Etienne, leader of the colonial party in the 'French Chamber of Deputies, advocates securing the abrogation of the eolf-denying Anglo-French ordinance regarding the Now Hebrides. 'He contends that New _ Caledonia will never be prosperous or strategically safe until the New Hebrides are French. The 'South Australian vintage of the present year was a record one. it produced nearly three million! gallons of wine.
