SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

The usual monthly meeting of the Richmond School Committee was held on Wednesday evening'; present—Messrs Pauli (chairman), Richards, O’Connor, Hilson, Sterling, Sorensen, and Cardwell. Apologies for absence were • received from Alessrs Shaw and Potter. A deputation from the Richmond Swimming Club waited. on the committee to arrange better terms between the club and committee during. the forthcoming swimming season. It was resolved—“ That one-half of members’ subscriptions should be granted to the club, provided tbs club’s paid-up membership numbered 1 160.” A. letter was received from the Secretary of the Labour Day Demonstration Committee asking the School Committee to close the school on Labour Day. Tbe request was granted. Correspondence was read from the Board of Education stating that in future every fourth pupil-teacher appointed must *be a male, and also- confirming the appointment of Air N. W. Pavitt as second master. The master reported that the number on the roll- was 577, and the average attendance for tbe past four weeks only 437. Several of the teachers had been absent during the month through influenza. Owing to the small attendance during the last few days through sickness the beadmaster urged the closing of the school at once. It was agreed to close the school and reopen bn Sept. 9. It was resolved that the lunch adjournment should be one hour and a quarter, during the summer term. The annual inspection report was received from the Board of Education. The report was of a highly'satisfactory nature, and a ■hearty vote of thanks was, passed to the headmaster and teaching staff. Several members called attention to the bad state of the grounds during the winter months, and the Chairman was instructed to wait on the Board of Education. The Treasurer reported a debit balance of £9 6s Bd. Accounts amounting to £lO 10s were passed for payment.
