A FORGERY CASE.
A man named Charles Ross was brought up before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., yesterday, on a charge of having forged a cheque for £6 10s on July 17. About the beginning of last month he took up his quarters at the Terminus Hotel, and on July 17 tendered the produced cheque to the licensee, Mr Ogden. The cheque, which purported to be signed by one Liston, was returned from the National Bank marked “no account.” . Reuben Ogden gave evidence, and identified the cheque. He stated accused had told him that he obtained it from an employee in the Union Steamship Company s office. , Frederick Nancarrow, a clerk in. the Union Steamship Company’s . office,, stated that he did not know accused, and that one named Liston worked in the Chris - church office of the company. James Ashton, licensee of the Clarendon Hotel, stated that the accused obtained a blank' cheque from him on. y 20. The number tallied with teat on the one produced. , vr n .
