SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

* The usual monthly meeting of the East Christchurcli School Committee was held o*a Thursday evening; present—Messrs Brunt (chairman), Clarke, Aiken, Otley, Franklin, Ensom, Lumsden and Strange. The Board of Education wrote stating that a. number of items asked for would be reported on by its'. A plebiscite taken of parents of children at town, was largely in favour of one hour only for dinner during the winter. It was resolved, in deference to this, not to alter the present arrangements. The master's monthly report showed that the roll number was 1423, but owing to prevalent sickness and bad weather, the average attendance had decreased to 1077. It was decided to grant a fortnight's holiday from August 9, and also to apply to the Board of Education for a full equipment of kindergarten materials. There being a balance in hand from the flag-hoisting demonstration at Phillipstown, the committee of ladies there had presented the school with a suppry of dumb-bells" and wands. It was resolveloj to conTey the cordial thanks of the Committee and headmaster for this gift. Aft exceedingly creditable display of woodcarving by the elder girls, and brush-paint- i ing by the juniors, was on exhibition, and ! it wa« resolved to express the committee's appreciation of the marked progress apparent in this department. The Inspector's annual reports were received, and the committee decided to thank the headmaster and staff for the uniform excellence of the report particular mention being made of the-.Phillipstown-report. It was resolved to invite applications for the position of caretaker.
