The fine weather in Ohristchurch on Friiajr. deluded many into the belief that •prtng was arriving. In the afternoon there was scarcely a cloud in the gky, and at sunHit'there "was every indication of a spell of fine weather. A light east -wind was blowing - , but shortly after it changed to a warm nor'-wester, which continued the greater- part of the night. Brilliant sheet lightning was observed on the south-, western horizon during the night, and the barometer fell rapidly. On Saturday morn*wg, though heavy clouds appeared hi *• the south-west, the weather was fine,'' and there . was a feeling ,©f • .spring in the air, but about ten, o'clock a, nor'-wester again arrived, and clouds of dust, an experience Ohristchurch has, not been subjected to for many months, flew along, the streets. About half-past eleven 'a' cold south-west rain commenced, aid, several showers- fell during the afternoon.- Portions of the Port Hills were coated with snow. 1 A, strong and bitterly cold south-west wind blew all yesterday at' ! Lytteltora, with occasional showers of rain, hail and -snow. A considerable quantity of snow fell oi the kills on the south sid-3 of 'the harbour. the " Lyttelton Times " correspondent^at Ashfaurton telegraphed yesterday:-—The •mother is bright,- but bitterly cold. On Saturday night the fra-t was intense, and the rurandng wateir in the street channels was -frozen this morning. Shortly after noon to-day a slight shower of snow fell. On Saturday morning in North, Canterbury a mild north-wester was blowing, but just before noon the wind changed to southwest, and! the weather was squally throughout the afternoon. At Oxford and along 4be bills to Waikari snow fell.
