TE ORANGA HOME.
INCREASED ACCOMMODATION; ■Tenders 'have been accepted for erecting a brick building two storeys'high in connec-tion-with, the Te-'Oranga Home, which .was opened in the. latter portion of for the-purpose, of dealing with girls who were formerly sent to ifche Burnham Industrial School. The work of erecting the new building will- be .started next week. This fact represents an important event iri the. history of tho institution. The inmates are now accommodated in a wooden building. The new brick" wing," as it is called, is only part of a scheme for a large building, the idea being to add.other wings as time goes on and necessity'demands. As there, are ten acres attached to the institution, - plenty of room is. available for increased accommodation. At present there '.are. eighteen inmates, at the- home, : , ( .The wooden building in use can accommodate about .twenty, and when: the building which is .about to be commenced is finished, there will be accommodation for twenty mors. But the best feature of >ho new departure is that it will allow of a scheme of classification being carried out.. Under -the existing arrangements all. girls are placed together, irrespective of good qualities 'or a desire to improve themselves. ■ The fresh arrangements will enable the authorities to classify the girls, and carry out the idea underlying, the institution in a moire'thorough manner. .'".I wish the.new building was-up .now, at this minute," said the matron to. a representative of this journal,. "as it is badly needed, and will greatly assist classification;." The Home is situated on a pleasant spot on the Lake Road, near Bnrwood, The inmates, besidesr' being educated and instructed, are trained in household duties. Those who are, after careful selection, considered suitable, are sent out to service as domestic helps, and many applications are forwarded to the institution for " good generals.'''
