MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES.

The fortnightly meeting of the Wools ton' Young People's Guild was held on Monday evening. There was a large attendance, and the President, the Rev T. F. ( Jones, occupied the chair. The subjects for the evening were short essays on some evils to be avoided—gambling and smoking. Essays were contributed by Messrs F. Wadman, W..Garton and E. Taylor, after which both subjects were fully discussed. Owing to Mr Garten's absence, his essay was read by Mr 11. ■ M'Connel, and Mr Jones also read an essay. , '. The half-yearly meeting of the Sydenham and Suburban Co-operative Money Club was held in Wesley ah Schoolroom, Brougham Street, on Wednesday .evening, when the president, Mr J. R. Blunt, presided, and •sixteen members were present. The report stated that the share list had closed with 1243 members, holding 3920 shares. The number of loans granted during the six months was 176, amounting to £4932 14s sd, Making a grand total since the foundation, of the Club of £98,307 8s sd. The present number of borrowers was 425, and the amount of interest on loans £B7O 2s 2d. The total receipts for the year amounted to £8954 7s Bd, being a weekly turnover of £344 Bs. The sum of £266 12s 6d had been disbursed in payment of accounts and salaries, leaving 'a credit balance of £978 4s Bd. The committee recommended thata dividend at the rate of lOd in the £ should be added to each complete 10s, standing to members' credit on June 30; that amounts over £IOO should receive a dividend at the rate of 5 per cent on each complete 10s; that £SO should be added to the reserve, and £3O to the suspense account ; that the auditors and Finance Committee shou'd receive the usual bonuses, and that the- balance should be carried forward. The balance-sheet showed receipts amounting to £9371 19s 104, and expenditure £7859 9s Id. The suspense account showed a credit balance of £25 0s 2d, and the profit and loss account a balance on the side of profit of £978 4s Bd. The statement of liabilities'and assets showed amount of stock to members' credit at. call, £20,540 17s 3d; reserve fund, £750; suspense account, £23 0s 2d, and credit bal-' ance £978 4s 8d; and amount of loans. bw- f ing to trustees, £20,029 lis 4d ; reserve in freehold property, £750; credit balance at Bank of New Zealand, £872 17s 6d ; and cash in hand, £639 13s 3d. The report and balance-sheet were then adopted. A meeting of the Tai Tapu Mutual Improvement Society was held in the Public Library on Monday evening last. Mr R. A! Forbes (the president) occupied the chair. The business consisted chiefly of criticisms on readings and recitations given by Mrs C. M. Suckling, Miss E. Forbes, and Messrs W. Morgan, .R. Gardiner, J. Voss and S. A. Kingan. Refreshments were handed round at the close of the meeting. The usual monthly meeting of the Tai Tapu Band of Hope was held en Sunday] afternoon last. Mr J. Voss (vice-president) ] occupied the chair, and there was a large attendance. Songs were- given by Mis.i Kissel, and Messrs R. Sinclair and W. ,K. Watson ; duets by the Misses N. Herrick and Linibrick and Dulieu (2); iecitations by Ruby Voss and Mr H. W.' Peryman, jun., and readings by. Mr W. Parrett and the Chairman. 'Sankey's hymns were sur.g under the leadership of Mr J. F.' Watson, Mrs T. O. Morgan acting as accompanist.
