PERSONAL.
Dr Brown, Messrs J.- Hislop, W. F. M. Buckley, J. Bayne, F. D. S. Neave, Inspeotor Ellison and Detective Cassells were amongst the passengers for the south by yesterday morning's express. Mr J. P. Firth, Principal of the Wellington College, has been granted- a year's leave of absence in order that he may take an extended holiday. Accompanied by Mrs Firth, he will leave for London about the end of the present year, and will return via America. The Rev W. .E. Gillam, formerly of Rangiora, now vicar of St Matthew's, Auckland, is' staying for a short time in Christchurch. Mr Gillam's visit is in connection with the building of the new stone church for his parish. The plans and specifications are placed 'in the Diocesan office, Christ's College, for the convenience of local contractors. The new church is estimated to cost from £27,0J)0 to £28,000, and will be the finest parish church m the colonies. The parish has the sum of £30,000 in hand for the purpose."
