M. Jean Gerardy, who is visiting New Zealand while in the very hey-day ct his fame as a solo ’cellist, will give his first recital in the Choral Hall to-morrow night. M. Gerardy is at the top among European, masters of-the ’cello, and his playing of the beautiful instrument is said to, be-a perfeet musical'revelation. , , 'The Christchurch Motett Society will give the “ Elijah ” on Tuesday next in the Canterbury Hall, and the “ Messiah ” on the following Thursday:' Madam© Belle Cole and Mr John Prouse will be the principal soloists. The second concert of the Christchurch Musical Union will be held in the Canterbury Hall to-morrow night. The programme is a comprehensive one, and includes a repetition of the characteristic “Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast” (ColeridgeTaylor), the production of which at the previous concert gave such gratification to the large audience. Beethoven’s “ Evoica Symphony,” Weber’s “Overture to-Oberon,” and German’s Masque from “As You Like It ” are the remaining numbers. Miss Graham and Mr Percy Denton will sing the solos. The examinations in manual training (woodwork) in connection with the City and Guilds of London Institute will be held in the Normal School on August 3 and 10, the drawing and written examinations being taken on the first date, and the practical examination on the last-named. A public meeting ■ will be held at the Road Board Office, Sheffield, on Saturday evening next, at 8 o’clock, with regard to the erection of a monument to district men who have fallen in South Africa. There will be a discussion at the Metaphysical Club this evening upon “ What is Consciousness.” The annual meeting of ratepayers of the Lincoln Road Board will be held at the District Office at one o’clock on Monday next. A district order is published asking all the returned troopers who were in South Africa, before July, 1900, who have not yet received their medals, to send their numbers and names in full to the Defence Office, Christchurch. The same order states that the musketry course will be completed with the Martini-Henry rifle. On account of the death of Mrs John Banks, the St Albans Wesleyan Church “ social,” arranged for Thursday evening, will bo postponed for a week. An ! entertainment will be held in St Mark’s Schoolroom, Opawa, to-night, consisting of a dramatic performance entitled “Poor Pillioody” and musical and other items. The Sam Weller Swarry to celebrate the forty-eighth anniversary of tie Loyal City of Christchurch Lodge, No, 4602, will be held on Friday, August 2, at the Oddfellows’ Chambers* Lichfield at 8 p.m.
