FIRES.

[Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, April 20. A house in Upper Queen Street wasburnt last night. It was owned by Mr Patrick Ryan. A boarder named Thomas Howell was severely injured by jumping from an upstairs window. The insurances were: —On the building £SOO in the South British Office, and on the furniture £IOO in-the Commercial Union Office. DUNEDIN, April 20. The Roxburgh correspondent of the Dunedin “ Star ” wires that Messrs Veale Bros.’ store, at Miller’s Plat, was completely destroyed by fire last night. The loss- is £350 above the insurance* The origin of the fire is unknown. Shortly after nine o’clock on Saturdaynight a glare of fire was seen in the Drillshed grounds, where the Federal i Contingent are encamped. The box at the corner of Cashel Street and Oxford Terrace Was broken, and the Fjre Brigade soon arrived there with all the plant, but by this time ho signs of fire were visible, and the Brigades returned to their stations. It appears that the adjutant in. the camp a'tent occupied by some of the Navals on fire, and he at once removed the arms and accoutrements, and. was also-able to save part of the men’s kits, but they lose-per-sonal property to the value of about £1 per man. The men farmed a line, and ■passed-along buckets of water, and the straw • -which - wa-s - used for bedding, ; and which provided the principal portion of the fuel ter the fire, was soon put out. •About half a dozen privates of the’Volunteer Fire Police were present, and did good work.

About half-past twelve yesterday a twostalled stable and shed, owned by Mr G. Stratford, at the corner of Tuam and Queen Streets, took fire,' and before the Brigade arrived;, the building, which Was an old: wooden one, was' completely demolished, and an unoccupied cottage, adjoining, belonging tte Mr J. A. Redpath, was considerably damaged. Neither of the buildings were insured. . About half an hour after noon yesterday a, small' fire, occurred; in a house in London Street, Lyttelton, owned by Mr Salkeld, of , Christchurch, and occupied by Mrs E. J. Evans. It was caused by a pan of -lighted charcoal having been placed underneath a stretcher, in- an upstairs bedroom, for fumigation purposes. The stretcher and mattress were ignited, and the burning contents of the latter falling to the floor set fire to the boards. The fire-bell was rung, and the Brigade turned out, but the fire was extinguished by some neighbours before any serious damage was done.
