EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE.

The eighteenth annual meeting of the North Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute was held last night in the rooms of the Young Men's Christian Association. Mr J. Voss, president, was in the chair. The Education Department wrote with regard to the allocation of the sum of £2OO voted to foster swimming, and stated that. £IOO would be* divided equally between swimming associations in Auckland and Canterbury, and £IOO would be placed in the hands of the Auckland Swimming Association to encourage ■swimming in primary schools, the moneys to be distributed according to the number learning in the education districts. The selection of a delegate was left to a committee. The Education Board wrote that it would endeavur to give effect to the recommendation that the practice of publishing in extenso the reports of inspectors’ examinations should be discouraged, and that it would .be unwise to make any alteration until it could be seen how the recent changes in the school staffs would affect the position with regard to the additional year conceded to children from country ' schools for scholarships. The annual report was adopted. The balancesheet showed a credit balance of £9 18s Bd. After an address had been given by the President, the meeting adjourned till 10.30 a.m. to-day, at the Normal School.
