William Topp, a trooper in the Auckland squad of the Fourth Contingent, ''who had been arrested at Wellington, was charged with failing to provide for the maintenance of . jiis illegitimate child. An order was made ,for the payment of 10s per week, £7 7s towards' expenses, and that he should find sureties for £IOO that he would comply with the order. ' ■ • - •
At the Supreme Court the hearing of a libel case Hall v. James Bennett, claim £2OO, was concluded. The case arose out of a fencing dispute. Defendant wrote a letter to the plaintiff in which he made allegations as to meanness and other matters four years old. The jury found that Bennett uttered and published a libel and that he was justified in doing so on all several charges. The conveyance of dairy produce to London by the steamer Rangitira has been finally arranged to the satisfaction of all parties interested. The Maori and Waimate, leaving on March 31 with the Fifth Contingent, will take the dairy produce already booked by the Waimate and probably something in excess. The Rangitira will take up the Maori’s hookings, leaving the , colony early in April- The terms of the contracts for delivery of butter will thus,'' be 'complied with, and there will be no'disturbance of the market except such as may be caused by detention at tho Ca»e* ,
