ABATTOIRS FOR ALL BOROUGHS.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —That abattoirs are not only desirable, but necessary, in all boroughs, is proved by the particulars to hand concerning the working of the Dunedin abattoirs for the last twelve months. We axe told that during that time the Dunedin Inspector had occasion to condemn 260 cattle, 168 sheep, 8 lambs, 19 pigs and 31 calves. Tuberculosis and hydatid cysts were the principal diseases. The latter is a dreadful disease, easily communicated to human beings, and every medical man can tell of an increasing number of cases. On the strength of the above facts, the Public Health Committees of all Borough Councils

ought surely to take this important matter in. hand, and strongly urge the various Councils to erect abattoirs and provide for the careful inspection of all meat. Another matter almost equally important is the proper inspection of the milk supply-—I am, etc., . PUBLIC HEALTH.
