THE WEATHER.

The weather at Lyttelton yesterday was most boisterous. A fierce southerly gale, with rain, was blowing throughout the fay, and the temperature fell to almost midwinter level. Very little work was possible at the wharves. Winter set in in earnest in. North Canterbury yesterday. - Snow fell on the hills the previous day, and -there was a sharp‘#rost during the night. Yesterday morning broke fine, but at eight o'clock clouds rolled over from bho, south-west, and during the ,day there was a very heavy downpour of rain on the plains and snow on the hills, Mount Grey and the adjacent ranges being’Thickly coated. The weather became finer in the afternoon, but occasional rain squalls passed over the country. A sharp south-westerly squall came up in South Canterbury about 6 a.m. yesterday, after a clear and calm night, and a heavy shower fell. The morning was then fairly fine, but in the afternoon a bitterly cold gale blew, with, a few short showers. In North Canterbury heavy showers fell throughout the day.
