CHRISTCHURCH. • . Thursday, May 11. (Before Mr R; M. Taylor, J.P., end Mr J. M; Thompson, J.P.) Drunkenness. — A man who Lad not been before the Court since November, 1897, was fined- 5s and costs, in default twentyfour hours’ imprisonment. Theft.— Edward Arthur Ryder was charged with having stolen a mackintosh overcoat and brief bag, value £3, the property of John Heseldine, and with having stolen an overcoat, value £2, the property of Thomas Mulligan. The accused pleaded guilty to both charges, and elected to be dealt with summarily. Sub-Inspector O’Brien, said the first overcoat had been stolen from the Whits Hart Hotel and the second from the City Hotel. .The accused, who had several previous convictions against him, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment oh the first charge, and three months’ on the second, the sentences to run concurrently. Corkran was adjourned till May 18, pending the arrival of a money-order for the amount claimed.- Henry' Berry and Co. vl : Edwin Weills , was also adjourned till May 18.—James Archer, v. Richard Scott, claim £l, as damages for loss of time caused to the plaintiff, a gardener, by the defendant extinguishing a'rubbish fire lighted in a section adjacent to his property. The case fumed on the question as to whether the plaintiff had obtained permission from the Council to light the fire. The plaintiff said he had done so, but the St Albans Town Clerk said he could not remember ever haying given the permission. Mr Bishop said the onus of proof lay with the plaintiff. He should have got permission, in writing. Judgment would be for defendant with costs. LYTTELTON. ■j Thursday, Mat 11. (Before Mr J. G. Fyfe, J.P.) Remanded. —A lad named 'James Walsh was remanded to appear at Timani on May 18, on a charge of stealing the sum of 19s. Drunkenness. —Jhmes Bertie and a first offender wyre each fined ss, m default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. ASHBURTON. : Thursday, - Mat 11. (Before Mr C. A. Wray, S.M.) Breach of the By-Laws.— J. Q^Caw. _y was fined 10s and costs, for allowing two cows, to trespass on the railway line. Abusive Banguaoe.— John O Bnen, charged with using abusive language in a public place, and also with stone-throwing, was fined 10s and costs. _ . , Civil Cases.— James Baker v. David Caimcross, claim £l3 18s 7d on judgment summons. An order was made for the payment of £1 a. week, in default, three weeks’ imprisonment. —Timothy Cormol ly v. Daniel Crawford, claim £2O 19s. The case was adjourned for a week.—Heseltine V, Norfolk, claim £4 16s 6d, for ‘goods delivered. Judgment went for plaintiff for the full amount, with costs.
