BOARD OF EDUCATION.

SOUTH CANTERBURY. The monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Board of Education was held on Wednesday ; present—Messrs Howell (chairman), Barclay, Moore, Inwood, Jackson, Keddie and Comrie. Advice was received that the Board's share of the balance of last yeai-'s vote for buildings in newly settled districts was £245. The architect reported that the plaster ceilings in Waimate School were dangerous, and several square yards had fallen. It was decided that the ceilings shoul d be papered and battened. A good deal of discussion took place over the election of a committee for Tengawai, and it was resolved to forward a protest against tlte election to the committee for remark. The Beard finally adopted a new site for the school, and decided to ask tho Lands Department to agree to an exchange. Tenders were received for building a schoolroom, but were' not opened, and the plans were referred back to the architect to be remodelled so as to embody a suggestion from the committee that two rooms' should be added as living rooms for tho teacher. Messrs Barclay and Keddie, who had visited the district, reported: that tho 'attendance at the Upper Otaio School' -was. very seriously affected by the distance the majority of the children lived from the school. The residents asked for assistance in the conveyance of children who lived over three miles from the school, and suggested that they should, be given 30s per head of average attendance on such children. The Board approved of the idea, but thought 30s too much, and revived to offer 20s as a trial for six months. Mr Barclay suggested that there, were other school districts where the' same system might be applied if this experiment 'proved satisfactory. It was resolved to close the Geraldine Flat School in August, as the average attendance was only sixteen. A tender was accepted for building a school at Salisbury. Eleven school districts failed to elect committees, and a- fresh election was fixed for May 29.
