CANTERBURY RUGBY UNION. A meeting of the committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union was held at 5 p.m. yesterday, at the Clarendon Hotel; present —Messrs A. E.' G. Rhodes (chairman), J. R. Evans, F. T. Evans, H. Frost, G. H. Mason, F. E. Asquith, G. Scott, E. M. Garr and W, G. Garrard (honorary secretary). The Albion Football Club was granted permission'to play' the'Ashburton, Pirates on May 24. The committee decided to grant its patronage to a concert to be given by the Merivale Football Club. A letter was read from Mr W. F. Ward, the Canterbury delegate to the New Zealand Rugby Union, with reference to matters which had come before the annual meeting. ■ The Kaiapoi Club wrote forwarding a list of defaulters. The Secretary said the list would only concern the Union if the players named wished to join some other olub. Mr Garrard reported that Messrs W. Walton and T. M. Buntin had informed Mm that they would not withdraw their resignations as members of the Permit Committe while the,resolution passed at the last genera! meeting stood on the hooks. In reply to a question, Mr Garrard said that though be would prefer to be relieved of the work he would give what assistance he could to the Permit Committee. The resignations of Messrs Walton and Buntin were accepted with regret, and it was decided to place on record the committee’s appreciation of the good work done by them since the first appointment of the Permit Committee. Messrs E. M. Carr and G. Scott ' and the Secretary were appointed a Permit Committee for the remainder of the season. Consideration of a letter from the Sydenham Club questioning a referee’s decision was deferred until a report had been received from,the referee. Albion, at Lancaster Park (west ground), Mr W. Irvine; Sydenham v. Kaiapoi, at Kaiapoi, Mr C. W. Garrard. Junior Flag—Lyttel ton v. Kaiapoi, on Christchurch ground, Mr A. Lawrence; Sydenham v. Richmond, at Sydenham, Mr W. E. Simes; Christchurch v. Linwood, at North Park, Mr J. Nixon; Merivale v. Albion, at Lancaster Park (south ground), Mr F. T. Evans. President’s Cup Merivale A v. Merivale B, at North Park, Mr A. Hooper; Linwosd v. Sunnier, at South Park, Mr H. Petrie;' Christchurch v. Albion B, at South Park, Mr G. Simpson. The Leeston Football Olub opened the season on Saturday, when a scratch match between teams selected by the captain (J. Rennie) and H. Fincham resulted in favour of the captain’s team by eight points to five. The annual meeting of the Ellesmere Football Association was held in the Leeston Hotel on Saturday ; present—Messrs S. P. Guiney (chairman), Irwell; N. Herron, Leeston; *Dr Withers, Southbridge; and Mr R. E. Brooke, secretary. The balance-sheet, showing a credit lof £2 7s Bd, was received. It was decided to continue the Association on ! the same lines as hist year, and to commence the Association matches on May 27. It was also decided to invite matches from teams representing the Ashburton and Malvjsm districts.
