The weather was bright and sunny, and the wicket fast. 1 Brockwell was chosen in place of Heame in the South of England team. Howell, Trumper and l Johns stood out of the Australian team. Dr Grace, who captained the Englishmen, won the toss, and elected to bat, Jones and Noble taking up the-attack. The first wicket fell for ll runs and the second for 20. Brockwell was neatly taken in the slips. M’Leod took up the bowling at 45 and Trnmble at 55, Jones going on again at 69 at the other end. The seventh South of England wicket fell for 166 runs, the eighth for 194, and; the ninth, for 207. Pry, who was, caught in the slips, halted for two hours, and his score included ten fours. The innings closed for 246, Lockwood carrying-out his- batefor 41. He was at the wickets for forty minutes. The fielding of the Australians was good, Laver’s work at point being magnificent.
