THE VOLUNTEERS.
Dismounted parades of the Canterbury Mounted Rifles will bo ‘ held at bead-' quarters, Tai Tapu and Halswell at 7.30 p.m. on June 2 and 16. Lieutenants Neave and the Earl of «3eafield have invited the corps to a smoke concert in the orderlyrrpom at 8 p.m. on June 7. A! company parade of the Christchurch City Rifles’ was held last night., There wa? a muster of 'forty-two ' members under Captain ■. ; Fairbairn • and Lieutenants Hawdon and’/Louisson. The last-named, officer went through the practical part of his 'examination lor a commission, under the supervision, of Major Slater, V.D. After the parade of the City Rifles last night a ballot' was taken to determine who prize for the; most .popular member of the company. The winner.,was Lance-Corporal Spry. The officers of the volunteer, corps, have been supplied by' the Government with revolvers —of the Adams make—and with sixty rounds of ammunition for each revolver. LieufcenantiColonel Gordon will leave for Wellington to-day to attend the Defence Conference.
