The fierce southerly gale which has been blowing during the last two days shows signs of abating, thongli' the weather is very wintry, and snow has fallen in the outlying districts, . . . ; GISBORNE,-May 30. The heaviest,sea known for many years is raging on the coast. A young mam named Thompson, son of the' Harbourmaster, was washed off the breakwater this morning, and had a narrow escape,' being over half an hour immersed in very broken water. He was picked np by a boat’s crew which went to. the rescue., in an exhausted condition. Tho boat, which had proceeded beyond the shelter of ' the breakwater; narrowly escaped swamping.
