Mr Chamberlain has returned the New Guinea Land Concession Ordinance to Sir William M’ Gregor, requiring its amendment in certain details. The criminal sittings of the Supreme Court opened yesterday morning. The Grand Jury threw out the bills against two of the accused, and seven other cases were disposed of by the common juries. The Court will resume rat 10 a.m. to-day. French newspapers advise the Government to strengthen the defences of Noumea. Owing tO'-a dlfference with two of his. colleagues the Premier of Italy, the Marquis de Rndini, resigned. He is now reconstituting the Cabinet. The opposition of Mr Reed, the Speaker, prevents the United States Congress dealing with the question of the annexation of Hawaii. It is reported that Admiral Dewey is short of provisions and ammunition. President MTHnley is considering the question of ordering the seizure of the Caroline Islands. According to the Kingston correspondent of the “ Times,” the Spanish squadron is now in Central American waters. A sensation has been created in the United Kingdom by the publication of the plans of Sir Matthew White Ridley for facilitating the mobilisation of the army reserves. In an interview with a representative of Reuter’s Agency, Mr Cbauncey Depew, the American railway magnate, expressed his opinion that the threat that Great Britain would join America in ?esisting any forcible intervention by the Powers at the-end of the war with Spain, had proved of incalculable advantage. In connection with the dymamite outrage at Melbourne on Saturday, a piece of the bomb, with the word “ Anarchy ” upon it, has been found. The Pope has written a letter justifying the action taken by the extreme Clericals in connection with the revolutionary outbreak in Italy. The letter has caused a great sensation. The Paris paper “ Politique Colonial ” states that the French expedition to the Upper Nile regions under Baron de Bouchamp has reached the Nile and hoisted, the Abyssinian flag. Mr E. F. Knight, the “Times” special war correspondent, has been captured Dy the Spaniards in Cuba.. The London quotations for New Zealand frozen mutton are : —Canterbury 3|d per lb, Dunedin and Southland 2|d, North Island 211-16 d; lamb, prime Canterbury 4 3-16 d; fair average, including Dunedin, Southland. Wellington and secondary Canterbury, 3|d.
