TO THE EDXTOE. Sie, —In the “ Annual Review of Stock" (1897), published by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company, the following significant statement appears: —" Want of regulation in competition has been the cause of a good deal of trouble.” Will the writer of that statement kindly answer the two following little questions i—(!) Is this state of things something new, and applicable to the particular season under review ? (2) Has he any idea whatever of any law or power that can, or ever did control or - regulate competition in the. commercial or industrial world'? If eel sure that many besides myself will be glad to have ah answer to these questions, because it does appear to some of us that competition is not the great booh to society it has been said to be, and if firms like the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company are being converted to our way of thinking, it is “ good business,” and inspires us with fresh'hope.—T am, &c., CO-OPERATION.
