SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Sydenham Borough Council was held last evening; present— Tho Mayor (MrN.K. Bowden), Councillors Murray, M’Millan, Halley, Muffett, Hadfield, Large, Beattie, Lafferty, Manlike, 801 l and Cutler. An apology for absence was received from Councillor Hirt/.ell.

A circular was received, asking for the sympathy and assistance of the Council in giving effect to the resolutions passed at the recent public meeting with regard to a training-ship for New Zealand. On the motion of Councillor Cutler, seconded by Councillor Murray, the Council expressed its sympathy with the proposal, and decided to give any assistance it could.

The Drainage Board wrote, stating that it could not forego its claim to penalties on rates paid over by the Council. The letter was referred to the Finance Committee.

Tho Secretary to tho Cyclists’ Conference wrote, drawing attention to tho unsatisfactory state of the roads in some portions of the borough, owing to the tram-rails in places projecting above the level of the road, and asking if tho Council would point this out to the Tramway Company. The Council decided to comply with tho request. The Sydenham and Addington United Cricket Club wrote, asking the Council to amend certain of tho conditions imposed with regard to the use of a pavilion which the club proposed to erect ou Sydenham Park.

A deputation from the club attended in support of the request, and after some discussion Councillor Hadfield gave notice of a motion amending the conditions. The Christchurch Tramway Company wrote, stating the conditions on which they would have been willing to construct the proposed extension had the Council seen fit to approve. Consideration of the letter was deferred till next meeting. The Works Committee reported that as tho contract with the Christchurch Gas Company for lighting tho streets or the borough had expired, it recommended that public tenders should be invited for lighting the streets either with electricity or gas for two or more years, as tenderers might think fit to tender for. The committee recommended that tho representatatives of the late Mr Robert Dawson should be informed that tho Council could not see its way to grant an application for concrete channelling and asphalt across the south end of Burlington Street unless the whole of the reserve which had been acquired by Mr Dawson were dedicated to widen the street. The committee recommended that tho suggestion of Messrs Hannan and Stevens to name the new street in R.S. 62 Mowbray Street should be given effect to. Tho report was adopted. The Finance Committee reported that during the past fortnight the receipts had been £774 2a lid; and the accounts for payment amounted to £6B 13s 7d. The balances of accounts were:—Credits Separate account, £396 I7s 3d; interest account, £937 10s lid; loan account, fixed deposit £1900; current account, £3132 7s Oci; total, £6360 15s lid. Debit—General account, £4226 7s 3d. Tho report was adopted.

On the motion of Councillor Hadfield, seconded by Councillor Large, the Clerk was instructed to ascertain if persons whoso houses wore connected with the telephone exchange would allow it to bo publicly announced that their telephones might be used to give an alarm in case of fire in the borough.

Councillor M’Millan, a retiring member of the Council, thanked the oilier members for tho kindness he had received at their hands during his term of office.

Tho Council then went into committee, and, on resuming, the meeting terminated.
