KAIAPOI BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual meeting of this Council was held on Tuesday evening; present—Councillors Fraser, Clark, Mathews, Hopkins, Feldwick, Bugg, Drabble, Simpson and Blakeley. Leave of absence was granted to his Worship the Mayor, and Councillor Feldwick was voted to the chair. Correspondence was received from the Secretary of the Kaiapoi Park Committee, staling that the committee was about to sink a deep well in the south-east corner, and suggesting that the Council should assist, seeing that the well could be utilised for fire prevention purposes. Referred to the Fire Prevention Committee for consideration. Mr Thomas Knight wrote, objecting to the Council depositing the drain cleanings on his land. Letter laid on table, Councillor Fraser objecting. Mr Waites wrote complaining of the Council leasing land adjoining his property, thus cutting off his entrance, and requesting the Council to cancel the lease. Agreed to. Mr W. Thurlow wrote asking permission to remove a building across the road from Mr Barnard’s section. Agreed to, subject to the usual conditions. The Surveyor’s report stated that a number of hawkers had interviewed him, stating that the excessive charge for hawkers’ and pedlars’ licenses prohibited them from doing any business; if the fee were a reasonable one they would not object. It was unanimously agreed to lower the fees for hawkers with conveyauce to £2 2s, and for pedlars to £1 Is pec year, and to half ■Vliese amounts for six months. Councillor Simnson drew attention to the need for new’ fire-bars for the steam fire engine. Referred to the Fire Prevention Committee. The Finance Committee reported receipts .£23 9sTld, debit balance <£534 4s 6d, and recommended accounts amounting to .£45 5s for payment. Report adopted. The matter of the erection of urinals was left to the Sanitary Committee. Specifications were read and adopted for the various drain cleanings, and tenders for the same were opened, and the following were accepted:—M’Tntosh’s drain, T. Murphy, <£s; Feldwick’s drain. Baker and Co., £2 19s; Dudley’s drain. Baker and Co., £2; Ohoka Road drain, B. Packwood, £1 17s 6d ; Beach Road drains, P. Sullivan, £Z 15s. No tenders were received for supply of kerosene, and it was resolved to get a supply alternately from each storekeeper in the town. The Council then rose.

The Council then sat as a Domain Board, and transacted some business. It was resolved to oiler a reward of £5 for the conviction of the person who had torn a calico by-law notice in two.
