Lord Brassey, addressing the Women’s Liberal Association, said that, as the son of perhaps one of the greatest employers of modern times, the knowledge of the overwork and miserable pay of factory women waa repugnant io him, as also was the present exposed and ill-guarded machinery and insanitary condition of the majority of factories. He urged that the State should take action to protect these women from the abuses mentioned. austsalian shearers. SYDNEY, May 24. The President of the Workers' Union officially denied the statement that tho executive had consented to the workers accepting a reduction of the shearing rate in certain districts from ill to 18s per 100 sheep, and adds that membero may engage under any form of agreement for the present season, but are strongly urged to maintain the Union rate, and on no account to accept a reduction. The Wilcanaia Branch of tho Union resolved that the executive acted cowardly, and no longer possessed its confidence, for allowing men to shear under any agreement, sad decided to adhere to tho Conference agreement. Tho Dunedin Assembly of Knights of Labour has decided to telegraph to tho Premier, calling attention to the largo number of unemployed, and requesting that work should be found for them.
